Winter 2015 Update: D5 Activities & Events

D5 presented a two-part session, Diversity Data…There’s a Story to Tell, at the Grants Managers Network Annual Conference on March 16, 2015. Nearly 80 foundation representatives attended the sessions to explore diversity data collection tools and trends in the field, engage in a strategy conversation, and learn from D5’s Kelly Brown two partners, The California Endowment (Dolores Estrada) and Cultural Data Project (Beth Tuttle) about their experience with diversity data collection. Convenings 

actionOn March 26, D5 Director Kelly Brown spoke to a gathering of Tampa Bay Funders hosted by the Florida Philanthropic Network about the case for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in philanthropy. Communications strategies and the Take 5 campaign were among the tools shared to support next steps in the region.

dataOn March 4, D5 took part in the West Coast briefing for top environmental groups and for media on the recent report by Green 2.0, The State of Diversity in Environmental Organizations, and the new GuideStar Exchange system for collecting diversity data.

More than 200 people filled a room at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco to hear from environmental leaders and advocates, who laid out the steps needed to diversify the leadership of the environmental movement and who called on the field’s leaders to publicly acknowledge their commitment to diversity with action. funding On January 29, D5 partnered with Philanthropy Southwest to bring together population-focused funds and interested stakeholders to discuss findings  from the D5/Bridgespan report, Population-Focused Funds: Positioning for the Future. The presentation can be found here.

Funder Workshops

actionAlso in early 2015, D5 partnered with two Regional Associations of Grantmakers to deliver workshops to support advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in philanthropy:

  • In partnership with  Northern California Grantmakers, on February 5, D5 presented Inspiring Action to Advance Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Philanthropy, an interactive workshop on how to communicate effectively and motivate others to take action to advance DEI in philanthropy.
